The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
Citrus Dragons are eager to please, typically excited by anything that makes you excited, and are down for anything. For those who struggle with anxiety or other mental health challenges, they are great companions to have in your keep. While they are no replacement for a good health plan, Citrus Dragons are uplifting and are content to just stay by your side and do whatever you’re doing. They place no expectations on you as their companion and are rather elastic-hearted, which also makes them great familiars for nervous beginners.
While they are fully sentient, some struggle with speech. There seems to be a vast range in intelligence. Some speak in simpler sentence structures while others come across as fluent and articulate speakers through telepathy. However, their emotions are typically rather basic and they don’t tend to experience more complex emotions. Because of this, and while Ember does classify them as being a bit more on the animalistic side, they are somewhere between beast and “human” in how they interact with the world. They can, of course, be reasoned with, but you may need to explain things to them a few times for them to fully grasp what you’re saying. Once they get the picture, they're happy to toddle off and complete any task that is asked of them.
A jack-of-all-trades type of familiar, Citrus Dragons can assist with the basics such as warding, cleansing, protection, and can help you develop a strong foundation for spirit communications. Citrus Dragons can help you get used to the way telepathy feels by how clearly unique their "speech patterns" are, and enjoy having dedicated pendulums for communication (although you should never just rely on pendulums alone).
