The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
While Forest Dragons are generally simple creatures, they are capable of telepathy and conveying themselves through emotions and the natural world around them. They prefer to spend a lot of time outdoors, so don’t be surprised to see them walking or running past windows or standing outside on the front lawn when idle and not actively working on nature based magics with you (which just so happens to be their specialty).
Forest Dragons are known for being curmudgeonly towards other Forest Dragons, so it’s not a good idea to have multiple in your spirit family unless they are already acquainted and know each other well. They tend to prefer being solitary, and enjoy one-on-one time with their witches over large family visits. They are very protective of their spaces, and as such, are likely to be protective of your home, your work, and of your person, so it’s a good idea to let them know when to relax and when to remain on guard. You can train them to spot threats and recognize unwanted energy signatures, as well as those that are welcome entities and people in your space.
