The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
Infernal Tigers are demons that all look relatively the same, and are easily twice the size of Earth tigers and far more muscular. Sometimes used as mounts due to their sheer size and power by the denizens of their Hell-like world (think fire and brimstone), Infernal Tigers have flames that fan out from the tops of their skulls like a crest, along their feet, and the tips of their tails, although their magical flames never burn unless on the attack. Their coats are a deep, dark charcoal, and their tiger stripes glow like flickering fire light, and their eyes are reminiscent of magma flows.
Infernal Tigers are fierce guardians that will protect their companions from harm. If you have been around more bestial hellhounds you might be familiar with the type of energy they produce. Infernal Tigers do require someone with a strong hand to set firm ground rules to operate under. Infernal Tigers are not capable of “talking”, but they can communicate through simple imagery and have shown a great depth of intelligence and wide range of emotions. They are most likely to communicate through hissing, growls, chuffing, and other similar vocalizations you’d expect from a tiger.
Infernal Tigers are priced a little higher compared to other familiars due to being more complex in nature and darker alignment, and require a slightly longer vetting period.
