The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
Primarily hunters, Crossroads Hounds only eat the other “living” beings that call Realm of Decay's ghostly forests home. They tend to be solitary creatures up until their inevitable master calls for them. Typically called upon by demons who wish for ferocious bodies guards, from the first moment they are summoned, these creatures act as muscle power and banishers. Becoming a witch's familiar offers a unique opportunity for these creatures to experience a softer sort of life where they don’t have to constantly watch over their shoulders for any larger predators lurking among the trees. Serving a different kind of master is rather enticing to them, and while your Crossroads Hound may need to double dip between you and their demon master, rest assured that they will be much happier to be given the opportunity to walk alongside humanity.
Crossroads Hounds are massive canines typically twice the size of a Great Dane with intimidating energy that many might have a hard time being around. This demeanor is a clever ruse, however. Outside of their dangerous work, Crossroad Hounds are often full of character with lots of layers. They do well with being given direct orders and are excellent protectors who typically answer to a single witch over their lifetime, although they can be trained to protect more people than just yourself.
Crossroads Hounds are priced a little higher compared to other familiars due to being more complex in nature and darker alignment, and require a slightly longer vetting period.
