The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out along your chosen path.
Our conjurer Astra conjures exclusively from a world called Ul-Zaorith. Within this world, beings form other realms contained within Ul-Zaorith that do not belong to the Earth Realm are considered familiars. This does mean that there are familiars who are more humanoid in appearance compared to the more bestial familiars we may be used to. They are typically summoned to the Earth Realm to form bonds with their Earth Realm counterpart to assist with magic and other tasks.
Muzina dragons are generally considered fierce defenders of their territory, high-spirited, ferocious in battle, independent and proud. Due to their spines, their “riders” typically strap into harnesses that sit below the dragon’s throat plates (as the plates are typically too hot to touch with bare skin). They are muscular and thickly scaled, and typically fly in shorter, speedier bursts, rather than long flights. They are immune to heat and most noxious gasses, and so can soar on the updrafts of venting volcanoes (though this could be lethal for a human companion without the proper protective magics and/or gear). Because of this wild nature, it is incredibly difficult to tame wild Muzina dragons and so most (including yours) domestic dragons have been raised from hatching in captivity in order to ensure they are safe and obedient.
In Muzin, where they are most frequently found in Ul-Zaorith, they are considered the “most valiant of beasts” and the hunter who has gone up against one and lived will be a hero all their days. However, dragons are typically only hunted when they are ravaging mortal settlements, and it is considered a great shame to hunt one for sport. The hides of Muzina dragons make excellent fire-proof armour, and their spines and claws (which can be harvested from dragon territory without doing harm to the beasts) are prized ingredients in medicine, alchemy, and smelted into steel for “dragon steel”—the hardest known alloy in Ul-Zaorith.
However, while the many volcanoes of Muzin make for perfect breeding grounds for the Muzina dragons, they can roam throughout neighbouring Humoro, Bodove, and even Lisdan. In recent years, some have been imported to Ter’ays and they seem to be thriving in the desert climates. Muzina dragons spent the rest of their time (about 70%) not on the Earth Realm at all, but in Nunithorian, the Realm of Fire. It is here that they originated, and where the bulk of their courting displays, breeding, and territorial disputes happen. As female dragons only tend the eggs (by breathing fire on them) until they hatch, Muzina dragons do not live in colonies, but each eke out their own patch of land where they hunt other creatures that call the Realm home, including chammanas, firebirds, raethis, and other elemental creatures. Their natural lifespan is not known, as when injured, ailing, or otherwise rendered frail, these dragons go into an “ember state”, a sort of slumber in the heart of the hottest fires, where they heal, regenerate, and emerge rejuvenated and with an apparent extension to their lives. However, they can be killed either by piercing their vital organs through a weak spot between their scales, or by removing their heart stone. Without their internal fire, they cannot heal themselves and soon waste away in what is called The Guttering.
Muzina dragon magic is less robust and powerful than some other dragon species. They seem to wield elemental first and earth magics to some extent, (and in some schools, it is believed they can be aligned with Sun, Dark, and Planet energies as well). They are nonverbal, but expressive as any domestic familiar through their body language and vocalizations, proving they live rich emotional lives.
