The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out along your chosen path.
Our conjurer Astra conjures exclusively from a world called Ul-Zaorith. Within this world, beings form other realms contained within Ul-Zaorith that do not belong to the Earth Realm are considered familiars. This does mean that there are familiars who are more humanoid in appearance compared to the more bestial familiars we may be used to. They are typically summoned to the Earth Realm to form bonds with their Earth Realm counterpart to assist with magic and other tasks.
Bodovian dragons are generally considered wise, peaceful guardians. They are happy to have their companion ride their backs as they fly, though their flight patterns are similar to Chinese dragons in that they twist and whirl through the sky. These sinewy sky dragons are benevolent and long-lived, featuring in myths and legends, sometimes even stepping in to grant mortal wishes in lieu of various deities. They are wish-granters but often speak in riddles, and to kill one is considered a terrible sin. Their blood, given freely, can heal any wound, but taken by
force can curse the person or land it touches. They are capable of mind speech and dreamwalking, and bring rain when they fly.
They split their time between the Spirit Realm and the Earth Realm. They are naturally immortal unless otherwise destroyed. It is considered a grievous sin to cause harm to a Bodovian dragon, though their blood has mysterious properties. When given freely, it can heal any injury, but when taken by force, it can destroy the person or place it touches. In Bodovian myth, their deity Arr, father of all dragons, fell in the fight with the Demons of the Void, the seven places where his bleeding body touched the Earth Realm became sanctified places.
Bodovian dragon magic is passive and protective, helping to defend them from attack, but also something they can wilfully extend to protect their companion and/or their companion’s space. They consume excess energy from cast magic, and so can act as a “cleanup” for spells you wish to dismantle, or for excess energy you need to purge.
