The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out along your chosen path.
Our conjurer Astra conjures exclusively from a world called Ul-Zaorith. Within this world, beings form other realms contained within Ul-Zaorith that do not belong to the Earth Realm are considered familiars. This does mean that there are familiars who are more humanoid in appearance compared to the more bestial familiars we may be used to. They are typically summoned to the Earth Realm to form bonds with their Earth Realm counterpart to assist with magic and other tasks.
Children of Loffur are ageless and genderless spirits (that sometimes choose to present with a gender).
They are said to lead mortals astray by twisting fate, enticing people to make one choice instead of another. The void energy created by shifting fates is what feeds a Child of Loffur. Children of Loffur increase possibility, opportunity, and the creation of new memories.
The Children of Loffur are creatures of shadow created by the Tirivahni God of the Shadow Realm, Loffur. They are able to shift their gender presentation though their general appearance does not shift; typically their skin and hair are various shades of grey. Their eyes are moonshine white on a black sclera. Their extremities are often “stained” black.
The void energy that the Children of Loffur feed on is known as Huskline. It fuels not only the Children of Loffur’s apparently youth and beauty (indeed their ability to hold a tangible form at all), it also keeps the Realm of Kukothrian functioning smoothly. As the primary source of possibility, potential, opportunity, and memory for the denizens of the Earth Realm, most mortals interact with Kukothrian in subtle ways every day without even realizing it.
Since time doesn’t exist in Kukothrian, Children of Loffur are in a constant cycle of learning and forgetting. If there are long gaps of time when you don’t spend time with your Child of Loffur, they may begin to forget things you’ve told them—but don’t worry, they are always happy to hear a story again! By spending time together, learning about your life and world (both so alien to Ul-Zaorith denizens that they translate as pure Huskline sources), you will increase the cohesion and potency of your familiar.
