The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out along your chosen path.
Our conjurer Astra conjures exclusively from a world called Ul-Zaorith. Within this world, beings form other realms contained within Ul-Zaorith that do not belong to the Earth Realm are considered familiars. This does mean that there are familiars who are more humanoid in appearance compared to the more bestial familiars we may be used to. They are typically summoned to the Earth Realm to form bonds with their Earth Realm counterpart to assist with magic and other tasks.
Padua shape the Realm of Dreams and speak in symbols (the sort of “dream logic” that makes sense in the subconscious but less so upon waking).
They can enhance and navigate astral travel, help recall and interpret dreams, and send messages through sleep. In waking, they enhance intuition, gut instinct, and sensitivity to omens.
Padua live in Vismithia, the Realm of Dreams, and are fully astral beings with no physical form. They can seem larger or smaller than their companion, depending on whether they’re trying to be discreet or overt, and often will be invisible, leaving only the sound of their voice, scent, or the jangle of their jewellery to guide you to specific cues.
When a Padua connects with a companion, they can generate a “lounge” that can be visited during astral travel, dreaming, and meditation. In this space, only thought and the subconscious mind matter. It is an excellent space to work on memory recall, process traumas, evaluate dreams, and problem solve.
While Vismithia and the Padua are naturally reachable through dreams, the Padua continue to observe and exist within your subconscious mind while you’re awake and alert. With careful practise, you can learn to sense their presence through mindfulness and inner awareness. You’ll find they present omens and send you signs to guide you. Really, their goal is to lead you to heed your own inner wisdom and intuition, and these exercises will help you become more in touch with these extrasensory perceptions.
