The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out along your chosen path.
Our conjurer Astra conjures exclusively from a world called Ul-Zaorith. Within this world, beings form other realms contained within Ul-Zaorith that do not belong to the Earth Realm are considered familiars. This does mean that there are familiars who are more humanoid in appearance compared to the more bestial familiars we may be used to. They are typically summoned to the Earth Realm to form bonds with their Earth Realm counterpart to assist with magic and other tasks.
Mirkins are sometimes called pocket or shoulder dragons as they like to stay close and can be quite clingy. Absolute hoarders, Mirkin dragons are drawn to anything shiny, including glass, metal, gemstones, jewelry, and even pretty plastics or resins. They help you see the beauty and value in the world around you, helping to inspire, focus on goals, and encourage taking pride in your appearance.
Mirkin dragons live in Peolysia, the Realm of Lesser Gods, and are beings formed of creation energy. They adjust size to suit their companion, so that they can perch on your shoulders comfortably, and often wrap their tails loosely around your neck for balance. They can also fly well in the astral and as such serve as excellent messengers.
Mirkins act as protectors of your personal space and possessions, often bilocating to ensure that things are well both with you and back at home. They are likely to claim a corner or nook as their own where they can build their energetic nests. This is often a storage space, where you keep supplies, or where clutter naturally gathers. It’s recommended that you choose a smooth stone to act as your “tribute” to your Mirkin dragon, and this should be kept in their next, except when summoning or releasing them.
The Mirkin can easily cohabitate in any Realm their master is. This is partly due to their innate connection with Peolysia, which keeps them stable and nourished. However, if they fight against an intruder into your space, they may need to fully return to Peolysia for a few days to fully replenish themselves. When defending their master, they expand to fill any space they are in, becoming fearsome guardians with razor-sharp claws and whip-like tail.
