The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out along your chosen path.
Our conjurer Astra conjures exclusively from a world called Ul-Zaorith. Within this world, beings form other realms contained within Ul-Zaorith that do not belong to the Earth Realm are considered familiars. This does mean that there are familiars who are more humanoid in appearance compared to the more bestial familiars we may be used to. They are typically summoned to the Earth Realm to form bonds with their Earth Realm counterpart to assist with magic and other tasks.
Locus Guardians are defenders by nature, offering support in areas their bonded host is weakest. From pinging you to practice self care, to flaring up a barrier to ward off malevolent forces, the Locus’s aim is to strengthen its host.
The Locus Guardian is likewise a sort of nexus of energy to defend you and your spirit family. Their physical form is but a tiny focal point for the vast energy of their being, like the match head is to the larger flame.
Locus Guardians are created in Fialysia, the Realm of Greater Gods, and are beings of pure creation energy. Their physical form is a compact piercing of the veil, almost a figurehead for the vast energetic leviathan that tethers them in Fialysia. This locus (from which they get their name) stands approximately 6” tall, but the energy that swirls off its “head” will swell and trail much longer when they are using their power.
Locus Guardians are personal protectors. While they also protect your extended spirit family, and other important individuals in your life as an extension of your own well-being, their primary focus is and will always be you. The Locus Guardian seeks out sources of distress, trauma, and danger, and will ping you to alert you of the danger. They still allow you to make your own life choices, but they want to ensure you are always supported no matter the events that befall you.
Note that the name comes from Locus: “the place where something happens, or the central area of interest.”
