The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
Peppermint Fairies are winter-aligned beings and as such tend to be more active during fall, winter (being their peak season), and spring, but much more slow and sluggish in the summertime. They are natural mood lifters and promote the desire to be close and near to your loved ones however you can. They can enhance winter and ice magics, and are also excellent assistants in the kitchen, and love to bake up a storm alongside their companions. While not necessarily an “ability” per se, these beings also smell vaguely of wintergreen, which--to those that find the scent soothing--may feel relaxed and at ease around them.
Peppermint Fairies are very friendly individuals who love to give gifts to the people they like, never expecting anything in return. They are always fresh faced and beaming no matter what time of day it is or what events have unfolded, they seem to know how to find the silver lining in everything. Peppermint Fairies are not prone to becoming down on themselves, and instead will do everything they can to lift the spirits of those around them and keep them high.
