The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
Watermelon Chameleons are a breath of fresh air. They are easy to excite and are generally affectionate towards their companions and spirit families, serving as the friend you can always count on to lift your mood. The energy of a Watermelon Chameleon is comparable to drinking cool lemon or cucumber water on a hot and stifling day; light and refreshing. Most of the time your Watermelon Chameleon--like many of the smaller familiars I conjure--will be content to just hitch a ride and hang out on your shoulder or arm while you work on your craft. They are climbers, so don’t be surprised if you find one suddenly climbing up your neck, scaling walls, conquering fridges, or finding the highest perch available to them.
Watermelon Chameleons are excellent at breaking up small energetic blocks and assisting in the regulation of emotions. While they themselves do not inherently eat parasites, if you know how to spot them, Watermelon Chameleons can be easily trained to hunt and feast upon them. As is true with many familiars, Watermelon Chameleons don’t speak using words but instead use energy to communicate. The longer you keep your Watermelon Chameleon around, the better you’ll be able to understand their wants and desires. In this way, they are very similar to dogs and cats who form unique languages with their special human that only their companion can understand. At the end of the day, these familiars are a wonderful new addition to any practitioner, experienced or just starting out.
