The dictionary definition of a familiar is "a demon supposedly attending and obeying a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal." Of course, as witchcraft has become more popular in media and its definition has grown and expanded, and so has our idea of familiars. These days, familiars can be anything from a pet, such as a cat, to a being bestowed upon the faithful by a deity. Utilizing a spirit companion as your familiar is a way to stay true to the more traditional form of the word, while still allowing yourself to branch out in variety.
Our conjurer Ember defines a familiar as astral beings such as fairies or unique creatures that call the astral home, born from its energy, or long deceased animal spirits who can be summoned to offer their aid. While each species of familiar will have their own unique skills and range in its intelligence and ability to communicate with words, one thing they all share in common is their desire to assist witches along their path.
Apple Dragons are very affectionate and wiggly, acting like their human is the best human in the whole world. Apple Dragons are incredibly in-tune with their keeper’s emotions and will often coil around their necks, sit in their laps, or drape over their companion’s shoulder when they sense that they are feeling unwell or low. They are loyal to a fault, but otherwise they are incredibly simple creatures. They are not capable of speech, and instead communicate through intuition and energy, and occasionally telepathic images.
These creatures do pair bond to their Apple Dragon mates and usually raise multiple clutches with their partner. Without a mate, Apple Dragons are typically solitary and only come together for mating displays and courting rituals. If you notice your Apple Dragon develops a habit of singing, they may be showing signs of being ready to find their mate and have a few babies of their own. If you give your Apple Dragon a safe space to nest in, they’ll reward you with many generations to come.
Apple Dragons are a wonderful addition for any practicing witch who wishes for a little bit of aid in the kitchen – either for kitchen magic or prepping ingredients for spells – and are always happy to perform small tasks for you. They also have a strong pull towards gardens. On the one hand, it could be their love of fruits and vegetables—which is what their diets are mostly made of—that makes them encourage their companions to run and maintain a garden of mostly food, but these little guys also love resting in soil and garden beds too. They especially love it when you grow edible plants in the house and can often be found sitting in pots left along window ledges to soak up sun rays.
