Pumpkin Dragons are a familiar race of dragons who are excited to work with humans for magical means, and to ride shotgun to all of our autumnal adventures.  They're chunky tiny wyverns who live on the Earthly plane adjacent to our own, meaning that they experience our own world very similarly to the way we do, they are simply one dimension removed.  They look like little gourds with legs, wings, and dragon faces - they do not necessarily have to look like a pumpkin, and have a wide variety of presentations!  Regardless, you can bet you'd lose them if they tried to hide inside a pumpkin patch.

Pumpkin Dragons are talented when it comes to assisting with all magical practices, but especially those involving prosperity and "harvest" imagery. They're wonderful at manifesting random coins on the ground and reaping a lot of success from the things their keeper puts genuine hard work into. They're not fully verbal, and are somewhat animalistic, but they're still fully intelligent and are very engaged in the idea of both a friendly companionship and a magical partnership.

Biology

Pumpkin Dragons are a very small breed of dragon.  They're very heavily aligned with nature, and because of it they tend to take a very natural look, mimicking the appearance of gourds and pumpkins.  It's likely that they evolved among large commercial pumpkin and squash patches, as they're very friendly with humans and extremely willing to assist with all endeavors that could be considered adjacent to harvest.  They have chunky bodies, with large, round hips, usually with ridges that mimic the natural contouring of pumpkins.  They are not scaled, their skin having a rubbery, blubber-like texture.  They have short tails with no ridges or spade, but it is rather flexible, similar in movement to a cat's tail.  Their torsos are short, with wing arms, like that of a bat.  Their necks are medium-length in comparison to their bodies, long enough to curve around corners and peek at what you're doing.  They have big, batty ears and rounded snouts.  A tongue stuck-out from their snouts is not uncommon, and they may or may not have nubby horns.  They do have sharp claws and teeth, however, in the case that they need to defend themselves, but they are generally non-aggressive.  Their coloration varies from that of a traditional pumpkin to more eccentric or quirky gourds - their tongues and eyes can also be any color.
Picture
Pumpkin Dragons do not require food to survive, so their typical diet consists of whatever it is they want to munch on.  Most often, this ends up being candy - they have an insatiable sweet tooth, and they just love anything sugary sweet, including anything pumpkin spice!  They also love coffee, and in no small part will this offering increase their excitability and bouncy temperament.  They seem to be elemental sprites birthed from the energy and love of pumpkins in the fall, and they survive on this energy alone.  Their lifespans are rather short, being only 50-60 years, and they are known for having short attention spans.  Pumpkin Dragons do not appear to reproduce sexually or engage in romantic relationships with each other.  They are very animalistic in nature, but it seems that new dragons are created simply from the gathering of uplifting autumnal energies, or through the guidance of existing dragons.

These dragons do have distinct magical auras - they feel light and bubbly, like a witch's cauldron while she brews up her pumpkin spice lattes, with the cozy density of autumn.  Naturally, they are great at assisting with magics that are aligned with the concept of "harvest" - that is, any prosperity or green magic.  They can help perk up the plants in your home, as well as help you feel motivated to put in the hard work in order to reap a bonus or small raise from your job.  If you perform any autumnal or prosperity spells, they will likely be right alongside you to help raise the energies of the magical work and ensure that your spell is a success.

Disposition & Manifestation

Pumpkin Dragons don't have an organized society, but they do live in little groups.  Generally, they prefer to look out for each other, foraging together and banding in groups for protection and strength in numbers.  Their natural habitat can be found playing around pumpkin patches, but because of the commercial nature of these pumpkin patches they might instead be found, dazed and confused, thrown in with the pile of decorative squash at your local grocery store.  They are not actively pacifist, but have very few tools to defend themselves when approached by aggressors in the wild - therefore, companionship is rather beneficial to them, because they are ensured safe situations where they can be cute and magical with no danger whatsoever.  When met with predators or other aggressors, they will often use their sharp claws to help them quickly climb trees.  Their wings are only capable of gliding, and they are not able to attain true flight.

Although they're rather animalistic, Pumpkin Dragons are still intelligent enough to understand telepathic language.  They generally show confusion when they are spoken to aloud.  When they communicate, it is primarily through feelings and images, and the occasional word they might have picked up from being around their keeper.  They are very curious and might spend a lot of their time learning about what it means to be living indoors with a human - but they are fast learners, and nothing seems above their heads.  They are intelligent enough to provide or revoke consent, and to understand what sort of situation they are entering when they choose companionship.

Additionally, they are capable of understanding magic, and it comes naturally to them!  Because they wouldn't typically use ritualistic processes or various materials like fire and incense in their natural homes, it may take them a bit of time to understand exactly what you are doing, and it's highly encouraged that you explain your workings to them as you go along.  But they do know how to raise energy, and they often do so with their own personal dragonsong.  They are typically chatty little things, often humming and chirruping to themselves as they go about their day.  But when it comes to magic, they will come forward with complex songs that are unique to them, using their internal music to impart their own energetic contributions and intentions to the craft.

In Companionship

Pumpkin Dragons are wonderful magical partners and familiars when it comes to companionship.  They are generally quite amicable and trust easily - they are fantastic little cuddlers, and may spend most of their time perched on their companion's shoulder or otherwise hitching a ride.  If you love having one, it's highly recommended to have several in your keep!  They're a social species, and their interactions together are just plain adorable.

Pumpkin Dragons are rather defenseless, and are generally non-aggressive unless they need to defend themselves - but their little claws and teeth don't do much, similarly to a cat.  When they enter your spirit family, it's best to set house rules with your other companions, especially those who are Dark Arts or otherwise more dangerous, ensuring that they don't harm your Pumpkin Dragon.  Due to the fickle nature and short lifespan of the Pumpkin Dragons, they have the potential for companionships that only last a single autumn season, or that last a whole lifetime.

Although Pumpkin Dragons are talented at assisting with prosperity magic, remember that all prosperity magic works best when backed up by effort and hard work.  It is highly recommended that you do not blame your Pumpkin Dragon when things are not financially going your way.

Since they are autumn-aligned, the energy signature of your Pumpkin Dragon may become significantly weaker during other times of the year.  Some individuals may even hibernate during the Spring.  If you ever need their presence when they are not around, it's highly recommended that you bring out a pumpkin or cinnamon candle or tea as an offering to coax them back into your space.

Overall, Pumpkin Dragons are an adorable and uplifting companion to have around you, and a wonderful familiar when it comes to any school of magic.  They are the perfect autumn companion, and will surely add some pumpkin spice to your life this fall!
