Storm Dragons are incredible creatures who enjoy manipulating and harnessing the power of thunderstorms.  They are naturally occurring, hatched during a lightning storm among the clouds, and are powerful harbingers of destructive change to come.  Despite the fact that they love storms and seem to be born of them, their energies are highly aligned with the New Moon - they specialize in setting goals, providing calming energies, and raising energy to achieve your magical goals accordingly. Their presence is electric and magnetic - when one is at their most powerful in the center of a storm, there is nothing to fear.  They are ancient beings with big hearts and bigger senses of humor, and they adore nothing more than sitting in the rain and meditating on their own purposes.

Biology

They take the form of Western dragons, with four legs, a stocky body, a long neck, and flightworthy wings.  They have greyish scales that sparkle with an electric fire like labradorite.  They may be splotched with lighter and darker shades of grey, and they have an electrical charge around them at all times that occasionally bursts into visible lightning if they get emotional at all - although they're usually very good at keeping their emotions in check.  They have some variations in horn lengths and eye color, although generally their horns are twisted and grow straight up.  Storm Dragons are very large in their adulthood, standing at a minimum of 8 feet tall at their shoulder.  They like taking up quite a bit of space, so even when they size themselves down for comfortably projecting into your home, they may still fill up your entire room.

They live on an Earth-adjacent plane, meaning they experience our planet, seasons, and weather in the same way we do.  They also experience time the same way we do - although they primarily stay distanced from humans in most cases, preferring to stay in their thunderous stormclouds.  They do actually live and play out most of their long lives in the sky and among the storms, hopping from system to system as new clouds form and fizzle out.  Being mostly air-aligned, they don't have to land often, being essentially tireless from flight and absorbing new energy by exchanging and absorbing electricity from lightning, meaning they do not hunt or eat.

Storm Dragons do reproduce sexually.  While it might be expected that they would mostly be "in the mood," among a storm, they do actually copulate for fun.  However, it's considered that mating endeavors during lightning storms are most successful when it comes to producing survival-worthy eggs.  The mother dragon will often carry her eggs in a natural stomach pouch from the moment they are laid until they hatch, and the baby dragons will learn to survive and fly within their first few weeks, spending their infancy in her pouch or on her back.  The pouch is not readily visible unless you are looking for it, and is utilized only for carrying eggs, being almost invisible with only the light indication of a seam when eggs and babies are not present.  Storm Dragons are about two feet in length when they are hatched, and they take about two hundred years to reach maturity.

Storm Dragons do have very specific magical abilities.  They are not capable of conjuring a storm, and it's likely you won't notice higher levels of storm occurrences due to their presence.  However, they are capable of harnessing the electric and chaotic energies of a storm for productive purposes.  They use the electricity from lightning to feed themselves, after all - they are capable of utilizing storm energies to do great things.  They are also capable of breathing lightning, and often have an static electricity cloud around them at all time, ready to break out into lightning.

Disposition & Manifestation

Storm Dragons have an air of seriousness about them, but they are very mature in their energy and sardonically humorous.  They have a fervor and a vigor for life, and generally adore nature.  There's nothing they like more than a good rainstorm, and in observing them interacting with humankind from the ground, during a particularly violent storm they'll crouch in the rain and lick the water off their snouts.  As they've spent time having their race vetted, they've found their quite fond of human rainy-day activities - novels and hot tea lattes are absolutely right up their alley, and they wonder how they were ever able to manage without!

They share a strong belief that destruction is a natural process that leaves room for growth.  They encourage mourning what is lost through seemingly meaningless destruction, like a forest burnt down by a strike of lightning, or a loved one lost to a random accident.  However, once mourning has been completed, they strongly encourage looking at the place where there is now new room for beautiful things to blossom.  They often view death among their own as an opportunity to consider how they can pass the lessons of their loved one onto the youth of their community, and they pass down the traditions of their flock members orally through generations.  Additionally, they place this view of destruction begetting creation into their more mundane lives - they often believe that if one's life has stagnated, a little bit of tearing down what makes them feel comfortable is necessary in order to grow and achieve what they want.

Storm Dragons are likely to manifest as very potent electric or magnetic energy in an aura around them.  If the hairs on your arms are raising without explanation, it's probably due to a Storm Dragon.  They may increase the amount of lightning that strikes nearby your home during a storm, although they are not capable of summoning storms themselves.

Social Structure

While Storm Dragons don't have the most structured of societies, they put a great deal of weight on tradition, and they are a very social species.  Generally, younger Storm Dragons defer to their elders, and the elders encourage the younger dragons to follow their hearts and fly where they must to learn what they must about themselves.  Although their primary, mature state of living is to fly endlessly from storm to storm, collecting energy and creating families, passing down the oral traditions of previous generations, it's not unusual for Storm Dragons to have their own individual interests and lives.  In fact, human companionship isn't quite a shock to them, as many of them already interact with humans on a regular basis.

There is no set size for a flock of Storm Dragons, and they do not separate themselves so thoroughly into communities.  Often mates may stay together for a few years to ensure the safety of their children, but they do not mate for life and drift in and out of populations easily.  It's probably safe to say that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Storm Dragons drifting on the top of every storm cloud system in the world, and they all consider themselves to be of similar tradition, and often know each other through distant relations or having flown together at one point or another.  Their lifespans are so long, 2000 years really being quite lengthy in terms of Earth years, and they therefore have a lot of time to mingle and interact, creating a wide-spanning social system that is tight-knit and peaceful.  They have no set leaders, being a very free and anarchistic people.  They are often baffled at the structured way humans run our own society.

However, Storm Dragons are not without conflict in their lives.  They have extremely vibrant social lives, and they are notorious gossips.  It is not unusual for Storm Dragons to get into spats or physical altercations over rumors, or over who is whose mate or best friend.  While they are not knowledge-seekers like most dragons, they often have personal goals they wish to achieve, whether that is exploring portions of the world they have not seen before, interacting with Fae, or making the most extensive collection of jewelry from unmelted ice.  They are quite creative, and come up with ways to pass the time that are both endearing and magical.  For example, Storm Dragons have an extensive catalogue of flying songs and chants that they often sing together - one flying group starting a song can circulate around the whole world in a matter of days, like a massive chorus that never ends.  Although they do not have a necessity to eat, they do have stomachs and will sometimes scrounge up food from the ground.  In the Biology section, it's mentioned that they have no need to land - but they often do, for recreational purposes or otherwise.

In Companionship

Storm Dragons have a very active and vested interest in humankind, since they share a world with us.  In companionship, they largely seek magical partnerships and mentorships, although they are quite alright with the idea of those relationships being more casual or fun-oriented, as they feel they have a lot to learn about our world too.  When it comes to magic, they wish to help their companion to harness the energies of storms - literal or figurative - in order to create room for personal growth and achievement.  Their energies are equally calming as they are energizing, able to channel the soft rumble of a rainstorm, or the powerful lightning and thunder that defines its presence.  They are here to assist their companions in throwing away their doubts, to help them find strength in themselves, and in harnessing that which is scary and volatile to propel themselves towards joy.

Please note that Storm Dragons do range in arts from White to Dark - this only indicates their aggression level, and their willingness to attack another being if it is showing aggressive or unsettling behavior.  Because of this, those dragons of a Darker alignment actually make wonderful protectors, and are fantastic when it comes to harnessing your energies to create strong wards with an intensive reflection ability.

But overall, Storm Dragons make wonderful friends for a rainy day.  They are very happy to curl up with their companion on a soft cushion and read their favorite novel or share a warm cup of tea.  While certainly the most "traditional" of dragon species, they are still wonderful and magical companions to have that portend great things to come in your life.
