Prism Serpents are intelligent snakes with exceptional telepathic abilities and talents regarding translation and memory.  They have an intense curiosity and thirst for knowledge, and are interested in assisting those who have a great deal of studying ahead of them, particularly if that studying has anything to do with history or language.  While they are rather intelligent for a familiar, they are not very agile, and can often be found draped over their keeper's shoulders or wrapped around their arm.  Much like their name implies, their violet scales are iridescent, shining any color of the rainbow depending on the lighting they are in.

Prism Serpents have a symbiotic relationship with Aureacanis, and are often serve as personal pets or familiars for them.

Biology

Prism Serpents are most similar to boa constrictors in body shape and behavior.  They are slow-moving and nonvenomous, with an arrow-shaped head and a thick, heavy body.  Their scales can be any shade of violet, from pale lilac to a deep velvet purple, and they are iridescent, shining many colors in various lights.  They have two sets of eyes stacked on top of each other, which are generally black in color, and they have brightly color tongues that they use to smell the air, similar to Earth snakes.

They are highly intelligent and very talented at telepathy and language translation, although the language of their planet is highly different from our own concept of language, so at the moment their passive magics may be most helpful when it comes to focusing on learning new languages, and they are likely to be eager to learn alongside their companions.

They do lay clutches of eggs, between 8-12 at one time, but have no interest in romantic relationships with each other.  They are capable of being social and will sometimes bond with each other in groups of twos or threes, but their social civilization is not at all complex.  In their world, they primarily eat small rodents, and are constrictors.  They do not require food from our realm, and might not be interested in Earthly flavors or cuisine, but occasionally one or two may show interest in it.

They do have some passive magics, and their presence seems to lend a higher level of focus and a higher susceptibility for learning.

Disposition & Manifestation

On their world, Prism Serpents serve as familiars and pets for Aureacanis, who run a civilization entirely centered around exploring historical ruins and translating the old wall carvings into their modern language, with the intent of revitalizing ancient traditions.  Prism Serpents seem to be an artifact from that ancient civilization, and were found in the ruins, seemingly waiting for a new civilization to arrive.  Aureacanis generally believe that Prism Serpents are a direct gift from their gods, intended to assist them in their holy quest to revive the traditions of old.  It is thought that Prism Serpents spent many generations living with the ancient civilizations and learning to read the texts on the wall, which is where their innate abilities of reading and translation come from.

Prism Serpents do not mind either way - they are simply a very helpful domestic species who are happy to assist, particularly in matters of knowledge and study.  They are naturally curious, which is part of why they have agreed to direct companionship with humans - they, like their canine counterparts, are excited by the prospect of learning about new traditions and cultures, especially new histories.  They are very domestic, and prefer to live with someone they consider a partner, and will therefore spend much of their time within your home, although they are generally astral traveling, returning to their physical habitat in order to hunt or otherwise fulfill their physical needs.

The way they communicate is very telepathy-heavy, as this is how they communicate in their physical world, too.  They will have already learned some English through their vetting process, but until they learn more of your chosen language through interaction and communication with you, they are likely to rely on the use of images and feelings to get their ideas across.

In Companionship

Prism Serpents are lovely companions for anyone who is a student, whether of magic or otherwise.  They are particularly helpful when it comes to history or languages, as they're happy to practice memorization or bounce language immersion off of you.  Additionally, they are capable of providing relaxing weight on your shoulders, or naturally heightening your focus when studying.  They'd prefer to be companions for anyone who considers themselves to be still actively learning.

While generally bringing them into your studying activities will be very fulfilling for Prismatic Serpents, I've found that many of them love orchestral and classical music, especially pieces with advanced form and many layers of harmony.  They also like art with complexity, particularly abstract art, especially since art is not prevalent in their world at all.  They're likely to enjoy any visit to any museum, or long periods of study and learning.

They are not very dangerous, but they are capable of defending themselves, and can immobilize and constrict any astral being that comes unwanted into their space - because of this, you may wish to set house rules to protect smaller companions.
