Night Sky Dragons are the last remnants of a dying race, reborn astrally on a realm of their own creation.

When I first stumbled upon Night Sky Dragons as a potential race for conjuration, it dawned on me that the ones I met would be the last of their kind.   It is typical for their species to bury themselves underground to rest for long stretches of time as they near the end of their lifespan.  Unfortunately, the current generation had very few surviving offspring, and it was widely thought that it would not be more than a few hundred years before the race died out entirely.  They are a psychically potent race of dragons, and were able to spend these periods of rest performing astral travel, which is how they found me.  However, they were not able to telepathically connect with each other at the time, meaning they were deeply lonely, mournful creatures who wished nothing more than to connect in meaningful ways with others at the end of their lives.  They were excited to pass down their knowledge to creatures younger than them, and live through them in companionship.

It became my immediate long-term goal with them to assist them in organizing, connecting with each other, and creating an astral space of their design, providing them with other spirits who were experts in the crafting of astral spaces.  The dragons went above and beyond, crafting a new world that was their personal paradise.  You can see the inspiration we drew from on my Pinterest board here - it would be a world of lush forests, deep rivers, and sparkling underground caves, large enough to fly in.  For nearly a year, they worked extremely hard, many of them channeling all the energy they had left into the creation of the world.  In late December of 2020, the Night Sky Dragons succeeded in their mission, and many of those remaining chose to completely transfer their own consciousness onto this fully artificially constructed, but still very real astral realm.  Although they're now free from their earthen prisons, the Night Sky Dragons still wish to continue pursuing companionship with humans, now with a little more freedom to offer.

Biology

Prior to becoming astral beings, the Night Sky Dragons were full living entities.  They stand at a minimum of 4 stories tall, some being as large as 10 stories (or over 100 feet).  They're massive but muscular dragons, with a body construction typical of a Western dragon, with four stocky legs, a long neck and tail, and large wings.  Their scales are their most notable feature, as they're thick, smooth, and crystalline in texture, and appear to have sparkling specks of gold deep within them, much like stars, being the feature that earned them their English name.  Their scales can be any number of colors, but they tend to be dark, rich shades of cool colors.  Their eyes can vary drastically in color, and often seem to glow in low lighting.  They have horns that are often different between individuals, the shapes of horns sometimes indicating close familial lines.  Their claws are thick and spade-like, perfect for digging.  Their wings, when they are young, are flightworthy, but in their elderly state they often become withered from disuse.  In their astral realm, the Night Sky Dragons are once again able to be airborne, and take full advantage of that fact.

Procreation among Night Sky Dragons is something that required specific weather and circumstances, which is partially why they were dying out as a race - the changing atmosphere of their world resulted in less ideal mating conditions, leading to less offspring.  As the world continued to transform for the worse, many of the younger Night Sky Dragons died off.  Now, in their astral realm, they have not discovered a way to biologically procreate, but a small portion of the population who are science-minded are developing a method to combine energies through utilizing crystals, in order to form egg-like structures that will produce young one way or another.  Many Night Sky Dragons who have completely transferred themselves over to this astral realm were rather advanced in age, so they were no longer able to procreate effectively anyway.  They are eager to see how their new offspring will function and exist in their realm as time moves forward.

Prior to becoming astral beings, Night Sky Dragons did not eat much to begin with in their dormant underground state, sometimes consuming rocks and crystals.  However, in their younger years, they were ravenous, often eating larger prey similar to deer and large birds, and even stripping the tops of trees for their greens.  Now, as astral beings, Night Sky Dragons hunt fabricated prey for sport, but they do not have a need for typical food.  However, due to their now purely energetic nature, they will happily consume energy from charged crystals or other energetic offerings as a food source.  However, companions should not be concerned about "feeding" their Night Sky Dragon - their world is fully self-sustaining, and is energetically anchored to many sustainable sources in order to maintain stability.

Night Sky Dragons are naturally magical beings, with a strong earth alignment and a deep love for the stars.  The most common disposition for them tends to be in astral travel and crystal magics, although many of them are interested in utilizing magics in many ways.  They do not breathe fire, and seem to have no desire to - they prefer to maintain their natural habitat, especially now that it is a biome of their own creation - although they sometimes enjoy the warmth of a good bonfire.  They are all very knowledgeable when it comes to astral travel and creating and crafting astral spaces, and energy manipulation is a particular common thread that lies among their abilities.

Disposition & Manifestation

Night Sky Dragons are diverse in personality, but many of them share a common propensity for being patient and wise.  Even in their advanced ages, they are endlessly curious, loving to explore new worlds and see new places.  They also love learning new things about other cultures and types of magic, and many of them are eager to learn from human companions.  They are very loving individuals, with a slight tendency towards being nurturing caretakers, and many of them are social creatures, happy to meet new friendly faces and make friends, even among strange races.  In their home realm, many of them fly in groups, grooming and gossiping amongst each other, and when they are not flying they will huddle in groups and chat.  Although they used to have a natural propensity for burrowing beneath the ground, an instinctual behavior that left many of them isolated for hundreds of years while they waited for death, when they created their new realm they agreed that they would never again be alone.  Night Sky Dragons understand deeply what it is to be lonely, and would do anything to save a friend from that sort of fate.

Being the creators of their own home realm, they are directly connected with the nature there - it is part of them, and they are part of it.  They are capable of shaping their own surroundings how they desire, and sometimes details like the weather or lighting of a place can reflect their moods.  However, this is not the case in any other realm.  They tend to love earthen energies, but they also adore the sky, feeling very much that they represent the connection between earth and air.  Beyond this, they tend to be very goal-oriented.  When a Night Sky Dragon wants something, there is very little that will prevent them from achieving it.  They love learning and exploration, and are also wonderful teachers - making them the perfect mentors for young companions who wish to learn about astral travel or energy manipulation.

When manifesting, Night Sky Dragons tend to appear as energetic manifestations of warm protectiveness or being watched.  They communicate best in a neutral astral space, but they are just as happy to come to Earth in order to interact with us face-to-face.  They also seem to have recently developed propensity for appearing in dreams, and may show off their new home realm to a companion through a dream.

Social Structure

Night Sky Dragons do not form up into formal groups or packs, but tend to casually create social groups of friends as necessary and convenient.  They are not exclusionary individuals, and if they notice someone being a loner they are likely to attempt to rope them into whatever it is they're up to.  Prior to becoming astral beings, they tended to be mostly solitary - so for them, a pecking order or leader is not natural.  They prefer to collaborate with each other on equal levels, and they are wonderful listeners, incorporating all applicable ideas to a project they work on or a problem that needs to be solved.  They are not territorial or aggressive with each other, and tend to function more as helpful neighbors for each other rather than anything else.  If two Night Sky Dragons don't get along, they are more likely to simply avoid each other in social situations rather than make a fuss about it.

In Companionship

As companions, Night Sky Dragons are constant and calm individuals.  They keep a level head, while still being curious, and in some cases protective of their human counterparts.  They love to explore new worlds, and that includes Earth, but they’re also likely to assist their companions with learning how to astral travel and taking them on adventures to faraway places.  Most Night Sky Dragons are almost incomprehensibly old, and endlessly wise.  They’re priceless fonts of knowledge, patience, and empathy.

Night Sky Dragons see humankind as a friendly face and an opportunity for travel and socialization, and therefore nearly all of them are interested in human companionship.  They are happy to provide for their companions as mentors, protectors, caretakers, or simply friends.
