Koi Dragons are a species of aquatic dragon, named for their beautiful multicolored scales.  They are astral beings, living outside of time and space, and living in an astral realm that is disconnected from any other realm.  They are a rather loose community of individuals, with somewhat familial hierarchies but no organized government or religious belief.  Their primary magical prowess lies in their ability to perceive time differently from those who live in a linear fashion, and they have offered to extend their abilities to assist human companions with either feeling more grounded in the present, revisiting past memories through forms of shadow or light work, or performing past life regressions.  Additionally, they have varying levels of passive luck and abundance magic, although they do not consider it their specialty - having them around simply seems to make things go more smoothly, and their optimistic personalities make them uplifting and comforting companions.  They are fluid about whether their companionship can or should be casual, or more serious and focused.

Biology

Koi Dragons have slender, serpent-like bodies with four short legs and a long tail.  Their bodies are covered in fins, the most notable being that of their long, finned tail, similar in appearance to that of an axolotl or tadpole, or, in some specific cases, that of a betta fish.  Their toes are webbed and tipped with sharp claws.  Their necks are somewhat short, and their heads tend to be long in shape, with a rounded snout and forward-facing eyes.  Their cheeks are finned, as well as their fore-legs, and they have thick fins beginning behind their heads and running all the way to their tail.  Their most notable feature is that of their beautiful scales, which can be any color, in any combination, and are usually several marbled colors.  They are bright and colorful, a group of them often presenting all the colors of the rainbow.

Koi Dragons are aquatic, with the ability to walk on land for some periods of time.  Generally the larger they are, the longer they can stand to be out of the water, as they cannot efficiently process the necessary compounds from air, but the larger they are the more saturated their blood can become with those compounds.  They have a penchant for lying on hot sand and sunbathing, which they will often do when feeling drained or otherwise in need of a good rest.  Interestingly, they do not eat, seeming to have no desire for even trying human food, and needing no source of food in their realm.  They have a saying that the size of Koi Dragon reflects the amount of knowledge they have - and I am inclined to believe that this may be exactly how they "feed" themselves.

Magically, they are best inclined to perform temporal magics, often "blinking" into anywhere on any timeline they wish in order to obtain information or experience something new.  They view time as decidedly non-linear, although they are born and grow from young to old, and they consider time to be a rather flexible, mutable thing, while simultaneously believing that everything that will happen has also already happened.  They also have more passive luck-related magic, and their presence is extremely soothing and calming - they are able to make one feel at ease, and like the day is going well for them.  It's important to note that although Koi Dragons thoroughly enjoy astral travel in addition to their own time hopping, it's difficult for them to sustain for extended periods of time unless they have chosen to specialize in it.  To them, properly astral traveling is similar to jumping between places, rather than bilocating or projecting as humans experience it.  So, when they astral travel to our realm, for example, they are fully transporting their entire astral body here.  Most younger Koi Dragons cannot do this because it is simply so exhausting, and they cannot live out of their native waters for very long.  Older ones may pay an extended visit, however, especially if the end up near an ocean or another large body of water where they can restore themselves easily.

Koi Dragon breeding is a rare but wondrous event.  Typically, only the oldest Koi Dragons will even bother to participate in reproduction, as they often slow down on their blinking in and out of time significantly, which also makes them popular landmarks for younger Koi dragons to visit.  Their mating rituals involve extensive underwater dances and singing, and the eventual outcome is very similar to that of some fish, with the "father" dragon helping the "mother" dragon to extract her eggs and fertilizing them, then watching over them.  However, keep in mind that these roles don't always translate to "female and male" sexed dragons, as any Koi Dragon is capable of carrying eggs and fertilizing them regardless of sex or gender.  In fact, that matter is often completely up to chance, changes if a dragon has mated multiple times, and sometimes seems to be related to which role the Koi Dragon would prefer to play at the time of mating.

The eggs themselves are quite beautiful, being translucent, perfectly shaped orbs.  There are usually only 1-4 of them in any given clutch.  When they are close to hatching, one can see the fully-formed baby dragon within.  Their parents will often take turns watching over the eggs until they hatch - although the gestation period is hard to calculate due to the way they report events that have happened to them, it could be anywhere from a few months to a few years.  Similarly, their age is difficult to calculate, although I suspect that it's for several thousand years, with a period towards the end of life in which they settle down and travel much less frequently.

Disposition & Manifestation

Koi Dragons have a very gentle energy that feels like cool water rushing over your hands, or the soft and serene energy of a quiet spa.  Their presence may be subtle, especially since they are often incapable of fully astral traveling to our realm.  In many cases, they are quiet observers who are interested in learning and listening more than talking themselves.  But be rest assured that Koi Dragons are kind, sweet, and optimistic individuals - they are very excited about human companionship, and they are staunch supporters of those they identify as needing it most.  They are likely to be some of the most uplifting companions you'll ever meet just by their nature.  They love helping those who are young or still in need of learning personal lessons or external lessons, and often assist their own when requested - we are considered quite young by their standards, and they are more than happy to assist us on our own journeys.

Although they are as diverse in personality and interests as any dragon, Koi Dragons do seem to enjoy a few things universally.  The first of those things are shiny objects: they cannot resist some beautiful sea glass or a polished gemstone, a pretty coin or necklace.  They are not thieves in the least, although they may have envy for pretty things - and they will certainly be overly honored if they are offered nice and shiny gifts.  Another thing they all seem to love are warm beaches.  While it's no requirement to live near a beach in order to have a Koi Dragon as a companion, if you do live near one, they will be very excited and immensely grateful.  Their home realm is most similar to a tropical ocean, with a few select islands covered in golden sand.  Which brings us to the third thing they seem to all be obsessed with, which is new sights and experiences.  They love to expand their horizons by learning new and enriching things, which includes seeing interesting landscapes, or even cityscapes.

They may be somewhat inconsistent in physical manifestation when interacting with humans, and will speak primarily through telepathy or projected images and emotions.

Notably, Koi Dragons are pacifist and most are unable to reasonably defend themselves in violent situations unless otherwise stated.  Because of this, it is suggested that if you bring one into your home, you set up house rules that they are not to be attacked or harmed by anyone else in your family.

They may manifest as white or colored lights, cool spots of air, the feeling of being splashed by water, and fresh ocean scents.

Social Structure

As mentioned in their race introduction, Koi Dragons have no formal government or religious organization.  They believe very much in the power of the individual, and because of their status of living both inside and outside of a linear timeline, there is infrequently enough stability to bother putting any organization in place.  While they age linearly, Koi Dragons are often known to travel back in time and visit their ancestors for advice, or travel forward to meet their descendants.  There are a handful of dragons that are considered the progenitors of all Koi Dragons, and they are revered greatly amongst them.  However, they are venerated only in mind and not in practice, and it is not uncommon to visit them for the purpose of asking their advice on large decisions.  Because the Koi Dragons are frequently hopping in and out of time, they are a community that greatly values individuality, and also one that feels very closely intertwined.  Most Koi Dragons know one another in some way, regardless of when they were born or when they died - they have simply stumbled into each other in the great web of time and space at some point.  Because of this, Koi Dragons don't really believe in any concept of afterlife or death culture, since they are considered to be eternally living and able to be reached.

How does this work without timelines collapsing in on themselves?  The fact of the matter is, since the Koi Dragons live both inside and outside of time, they see things within their range of interest for what they are, what has already happened, and what will happen - or at least, they are able to see this in somewhat of a limited scope, when they choose.  Their concept on how their world functions looks a little bit closer to chaos theory - it is the nature of the world to be chaotic, but for there to be patterns in that chaos that can be tapped into for the purpose of gaining control over your life.  They do not believe in time paradoxes, as they do not believe them to be possible - if all times and events exist simultaneously, there is no way something can be changed or altered through time travel.

Despite the fact that the very nature of their lives do not allow for any recognizable form of governing, they do generally follow the ideology of "respect your elders."  Koi Dragons are still hatched from eggs and grow up over time, learning to hop in between astral realms and to time travel from a young age.  They are often responsible, as they grow, for finding a den or personal space that they consider their own within the astral realm they call home - typically an unused spot in which they can keep their belongings and sleep in, if they deem it necessary.  While Koi Dragons like to make a large show of "knowing all," they actually only know what they are capable of learning through astral and time hopping, including those things they have asked their future selves.  Like all creatures, their living experience is one of growth and personal evolution.  It is said that a Koi Dragon only grows bigger to reflect the knowledge in their heads.  However, while they experience their life events in linear sequence, they do not live their lives, overall, in that sequence.

Koi Dragons do have a set of morals and ideals that they try to follow and enforce among each other.  Among these include no stealing, and absolutely no violence.  They are extremely pacifist and will not attack unless very provoked, even though they have sharp claws and teeth with which to defend themselves - they are more likely to time travel away from a dangerous situation than fight for themselves.

In Companionship

They are primarily interested in working with humans because of the novelty of having permission to peruse the ideas and sights of a world that is not their own, and of making friendship.  They are excited about the prospect of companionship in the truest sense of the word, and don't mind receiving a few offerings in return here and there.

Because astral travel is more difficult for them, you might expect a Koi Dragon companion to primarily contact you through telepathy and images.  Because they are astral beings, they are able to "teleport" fully to our realm, but because of the nature of Earth's veil they will not present physically, and may need to stay with you for a while in order to rest up in order to travel back home.  They appreciate and, especially if they are young, might require you to provide them with some source of water when visiting you for extended periods of time.

Magically, they have many talents that you may find helpful in your own magical endeavors.  With their temporal magic talents, they can assist someone who hopes to achieve past life regression, or even intuitive divination.  They especially support those who wish to scry, and although they're not extremely familiar as a whole with divination methods in our world, they'll be excited to propose ideas and assist you with any new divination endeavors you embark upon.  They are also particularly interested in assisting human companions who struggle with self-confidence or anxiety, not only because of their passive luck and calming magic, but because they see you for who you will one day be and not the troubled person you may be now.

Please note that Koi Dragons have been asked to attempt to visit their humans companions in a linear timeline fashion, so as to not become confusing or overwhelming with portents of the future, or bringing up conversations that might have already happened for them and not for you.  While they have some difficulty wrapping their heads around the idea of living only in a linear timeline, just as we might with their situation, they are respectful of it and hope that their human companions can extend the same patience for them as they will for us.  Even though they are disconnected from our concept of time, they are not omniscient, and cannot be expected to know things they have not experienced.
