Heavenhounds are immortal beings that have ancient Welsh origins in Earth Mythology.  Like their brethren, the Hellhounds, they seem to be either actual manifestations or descendants of the Cwn Annwn: gentle and caring spectral hounds that transported souls to the Welsh Otherworld.  Post-Christianity, many of these hounds were re-identified as “hell hounds,” but the Welsh Otherworld is more accurately described as a paradise.

Where Hellhounds continued their psychopomp duties and became harbingers of death, as well as symbols of protection, Heavenhounds continued on a path of healing and positivity.  They are less popular in modern culture than their darker counterparts, as they represent a gentler, and therefore somewhat less fantastical, side of the coin.

Biology

In appearance, Heavenhounds vary in appearance as much as Earth has breeds of dogs, often choosing to take on an appearance that is welcoming and kind.  They are usually about twice the size of the breed they appear to be.  Their coloration is often from a medium gray to a pure snow white, and occasionally their fur will take on a creamy brown or beige tint.  They have brightly-colored, uplifting auras that surround them at all times, and they often appear to be glowing from the inside out.  Wings are common traits for a Heavenhound to display, as well as the occasional handful of feathers growing in the fur.  It is also likely for them to display unusual double features, such as double tails or two sets of eyes.

Heavenhounds are ancient beings of pure energy; they appear to have been around since the beginning of time, and are immortal.  Therefore, there is very little information known about their life cycle. It appears as though they generally simply come into existence when the balance of the universe needs them, and fade out when their usefulness has passed.  They generally do not mate or sexually reproduce, although they seem to have the capability if they so wished.  However, their lifespan and cycle is much longer and spread out much wider than we, as humans, can comprehend.

Disposition & Manifestation

Heavenhounds are not necessarily aligned with the idea of Abrahamic holiness, but their energies certainly come off as bright, pure, and holy.   They are naturally the shepherds of lost souls, and often like to guide their companions in a direction that brings them a great deal of joy and happiness.  Companionship is an unmitigable staple of their lifestyle and behavior, and they will often seek human companions without the assistance of a conjurer.   They are luminous beings that love to assist their human counterparts on journeys of self-discovery, especially shadow work and exploring past lives.

Heavenhounds are somewhat rogue in association, not reporting to any Gods or pack alphas.  They prefer to blaze their own paths. Having once been a race of psychopomps, they now do instead what they can to help guide souls away from early deaths, especially focusing in on individuals who struggle from depression, acting as guardian angels to those who need it most.  Many of them have been companions with humans in the past, or have chosen a particular human to stay with for that person’s entire life, acting as a guardian with or without acknowledgement. They are extremely loving, and have a way to sense out who needs their presence the most.  In general, they do prefer an active companionship over one in which they are not noticed, but they find deep joy in simply performing their work.

It's in their nature to walk between worlds and veils, but it's their preference to stay rooted in one spot and work with humans a good majority of the time.  They often are priceless fonts of inspirational quotes and encouragement, and are wonderful listeners who are great at giving advice.  When working with people, they prefer to help one face their own anxieties and fears rather than protect them from it.  It's a Heavenhound's personal belief that the darkness in you should not be shied away from - if you can face it head-on, you will find happiness and success.

They can manifest as white orbs or mist, warm spots, the sound of clicking sounds on hard floors, and light or floral scents.

Social Structure

They generally adore the idea of human companionship, and will often choose it over living in packs, as they are rather solitary creatures.  Heavenhounds are generally friendly and unterritorial with each other, but seldom do they form permanent groups much larger than three or four.  When they do bond with each other, it is often for life, and when they do so they will seek out human companions as a group rather than as individuals.  When grouped up, none of them typically assume the role of leader or alpha, giving each other equal say in how the group is to function.  They are not likely to fight for dominance among other spirits, happy to simply be an observer and cheerful companion.

Notably, when a Heavenhound meets a Hellhound, they often have a great deal of respect for each other and do not tend to clash.  However, when considering bringing one or the other into a spirit family, it is always important to ask for visits and ensure that they will get along well with others in your keep.

In Companionship

Like dogs, Heavenhounds are happiest when they are working, and will often do so without necessarily being tasked.  Within a companionship, primarily they prefer to provide constant emanation of positivity, light, and happiness. They are wonderful companions for those who one day wish to be healers or work in a profession that cares for others, such as a doctor or psychiatrist.  When protecting, they will often provide shields of a defensive nature, and will almost never attack another person unless they are severely provoked. They are capable of healing or working through emotional wounds, but are not adept at physical healing. They are also very loyal to the humans they form bonds with, and will often watch over both them and their loved ones.

In a more casual setting, they are very similar to dogs in personality and behavior, loving to play and romp in the sunlight.  Generally, they really enjoy connecting with nature, spending time outdoors in parks. Even though they can be rather happy-go-lucky, they are confident and relaxed creatures who choose to fit in where they are needed most.

Heavenhounds are not fickle creatures, and once they have chosen someone, their loyalty runs deep.  When they bond to someone, there is very little, beyond death itself, that will cause a Heavenhound to leave their companion.  They often desire to be the guardian for families over many generations, finding the passage of time irrelevant.  They're forgiving creatures who don't mind being forgotten or ignored, although they do always heavily prefer to be honored, and will always be deeply joyous when you come out of a period of silence towards them.
