Candle Dragons are an adorable race I stumbled upon during Winter 2015, and they are just wonderful little creatures.  They appear to have no organized community, but they seem to all share sweet and inquisitive personality traits.  Their attitude can be quite young and immature, and although they have a great deal of respect and caution in their every step they are prone for accidentally falling into trouble.  Their skin looks like melted, drippy wax, and they manifest with colored, ever-burning flames positioned somewhere on their body, typically running down their spine.  They are wonderful magical partners for anyone who prefers candle magic, or would like a little snuggly companion for everyday.  They are also great when it comes to light work, and illuminating that which brings one joy.  They are truly little bundles of light and love!

Biology

Candle Dragons take the appearance of a little dragon formed out of wax.  They have four legs, a long tail, a short neck and a rectangular head with little sharp horns and floppy, lamb-like ears.  They sometimes have wings, which are not functional for flight.  They manifest with a flame burning somewhere on their body - typically on the top of their head or as "spines" running down their back - which represents their life force.  The flame can be any color, and it usually matches the color of their eyes.  Their body's wax is drippy and malleable in most situations, but can harden and solidify if they are very cold or very sick.

Candle Dragons are not fully living entities, and do not originate on any Earthly plane.  They seem to be fully-formed astral beings who simply pop into existence every now and then, scattering themselves where they are needed or wanted, but their exact origins are unclear - and having worked with them for nearly five years with no concrete answers regarding that, I do not expect to receive one any time soon.  They do not need to eat, but they can consume the basic essence of food to enjoy the flavors.  They also do not seem to engage in sexual or romantic relations with each other, and do not naturally gravitate towards tending eggs.  In fact, Candle Dragons do not seem to be very social with each other unless they are in already bonded pairs, preferring to keep their own spaces and distance from each other.

They have a natural magical resistance to heat and fire, and it is not unusual for them to sit in very hot bonfires or fireplaces when given the chance.  The flames on their body are clearly generated by their passive magics, and they are not hot to the touch, even in astral settings, but they do seem to regulate the internal heat and health of the Candle Dragon itself.  They are capable of breathing small flames in order to protect themselves, but overall they are rather squishy and nonviolent.  Candle Dragons who have spent more time around humans and are knowledgeable about Candle Magic love to participate - they find a great deal of potency in the quiet reverence of carving runes and sigils into a candle, and then burning it to release the magical energies.

Disposition & Manifestation

Candle Dragons, like most small dragons who are not native to human society, are curious little creatures with a streak of reverence within them.  They are highly respectful of their surroundings, often stepping lightly where they can - unfortunately, respect does not protect one from clumsiness, of which they have plenty.  They are quite capable of tumbling off of countertops and knocking things over with reckless abandon, and then skittering away to hide that they had anything to do with it.  They are generally mesmerized by fire and candle flames, and if you want to entertain one for several hours, a wood wick candle that sputters and pops would be the perfect toy to keep them entranced.  They seem to have a deep connection with the concept of Hearth Magic and the feeling of home, and connect well with deities that embody those ideals.  They do not seem overly enthused about matters of nature and the outdoors - they are fine with it, but overall prefer a warm, cozy home.

They are rather animalistic in nature, but they are capable of understanding telepathic language.  They may show confusion when spoken to aloud.  When they communicate, it is primarily through feelings and images, and the occasional word they might have picked up from being around their keeper.  Much of what they know to be a magical partner or familiar is already learned, but they will benefit greatly from things being explained or taught to them, especially at the beginning of a companionship.  They are intelligent enough to provide or revoke consent, and to understand what sort of situation they are entering when they choose companionship.

Generally, Candle Dragons are quiet and not very chatty, only communicating when they feel they need to or when they are spoken to.  They are fast learners, capable of analyzing situations easily, so be careful what you teach them!  They will mimic habits and words that their keeper does or says often.

Manifestations for Candle Dragons are most likely to feel like warm, weighted air.  They are likely to crawl or rest on their keeper's body, particularly on their shoulders, in their arms, or in their bags.  They seek out cozy spaces, and places they have been will often feel like a small animal just sat there for a long time.  They may also appear as flickering orbs or lights that match the color of their flame.

In Companionship

Candle Dragons primarily seek out familiar and magical partner relationships with their humans.  They are likely to be quite cuddly and touchy-feely, so keep that in mind if you are uncomfortable with those sorts of interactions!

They love anything involving candles and wax, and happily take them as offerings - even a wax melter would do.  Not only are their bodies made of it, but they might bathe in melted wax, undisturbed by the heat level, which seems to give them a few extra layers of protection, and in some cases it might add some colors to their constitution.  They naturally love divination, as well, particularly scrying, and they would be very supportive of a companion who tried ceromancy (divination with wax drippings or candles).

Candle Dragons must maintain a level of heat at all times, and love fire.  If you live in a cold climate, do not fear!  When out and about with your candle dragon, they may prefer to stay in your bag or nestled within your jacked to keep cozy.  A candle dragon's body hardening is formidable cause for health concerns, and if it does happen, they should be moved to a warm place as soon as possible, preferably a fire.  They appear to be immortal and incapable of dying completely, being that they appear to be magical representations of the spirits of candles, but they are capable of illness and needing to be nursed back to health.

They tend to not be highly sociable with each other, and are likely to bond fast and hard with their keeper.  They have the potential to make friends within your spirit family, but it should not be highly expected.

Candle Dragons make for magical and sweet companions who are likely to light up your life in unexpected ways.
