Bir'rix Dragons have no foundation in human myths, and were discovered upon my own astral travels.  It can be a bit difficult to find the main home of the Bir'rix, the Komu, without guidance from an individual, simply because they are scattered around nearly every astral realm imaginable.  They are a hardworking, populous healing race whose sole purpose are to bring good about in the world.  They are transformative and loving friends, and are likely to stay with a human companion for their full lifetime.

Biology

The Bir'rix have long, serpentlike bodies with short legs to support their weight.  Their skin is soft and leathery, often a dark black or brown color, with thick coats of feathers covering the skin.  They have large, feathered wings, and a feathered crest on their head, although it varies as to whether an individual will or will not present horns. They range over all imaginable colors, but their colors are often monotone over their whole body (no rainbow Bir'rix, for example), and many choose to wear jewelry.  They have eyes that often contrast from their feather color, but their colors do not indicate anything about their position or their interests.

Bir'rix dragons are born within eggs, which take roughly 6 months of our time to hatch.  They are roughly the size of an emu egg, and are grey with darker grey splotches.  Their mother tends to their eggs until they hatch, at which point she is considered fit to return to work.  Hatchlings are typically around 1-2 feet long, and they are born with overwhelmingly fluffy feathers.  Baby dragons are raised communally, and there is an entire career centered around childcare.

At roughly five years of age, the dragons are old enough to begin their training in healing.  At this point, they are about 3-4 feet tall, and much longer.  All start with general classes and instructors, learning how to manipulate energy.  Some show that they are very proficient in energy manipulation, while others less so.  They are given time to explore their interests, and when they are ready, they choose a specialization and an instructor.  There is no large ceremony to accompany this, but the action itself is referred to as the "Choosing."   They may decide between many healing specialties - energy (Reiki), crystal, potions/herbalism, music, acupuncture, and many more.  They are allowed to change their choice if they find it does not fit their needs or abilities.

For dragons who are not talented in energy manipulation, they may choose a less healing-oriented profession.  Some of these include hatchling caretaker, embalmer, ambassador, historian, architect, jewelry-maker, and assistant to healers.  Older dragons who have spent a lot of time working as a healer will also take on less intensive tasks, such as jobs involving paperwork or a leadership position.  The lifespan of a Bir'rix Dragon is roughly a thousand of our years.  They live for a very long time, and older dragons have the wisdom and internal peace to prove it.  They can grow to be up to four stories tall, at their largest.

The health of a Bir'rix Dragon is typically immaculate.  They do not require food, but instead draw their strength from the energy of the world around them - the earth of their floating island home, the air that drifts by, the Sun.  Illness is almost entirely unheard of, as they are very adept at healing both themselves and each other.  Mental health is a number one priority, and if a Bir'rix begins showing symptoms of a mental disorder, they will be taken care of as swiftly and carefully as possible.  Most Bir'rix dragons know every other one, regardless of the large numbers of their community, and they will check in with each other regularly.

Disposition & Manifestation

Overall, the community of dragons is incredibly caring and supportive, and it shows in their personalities and demeanors.  They are pacifist, and have never gone to war with another species or community.  The gates of their community are always open, and they have no concept of guards or warriors.  In fact, they will often heal other species, considering them to be very important guests.  They live on an astral realm, and are talented at hopping between dimensions.  They often perform their healing work in other realms, performing "house calls" as is necessary.

Bir'rix tend to be calm and patient, with rarely any temper.  Some of them do follow darker paths, but they still consider it to be a path to healing - for example, even Bir'rix focused on death work believe that removing stigma from death culture and finding healthy ways to grieve are important to one's health.  Furthermore, they believe in the unity of body, mind, and soul, and believe the healing of each aspect to be important to an individual's health.  Therefore, healers who work on one's mental health are considered just as important as one who creates splints for broken bones.

Their presence is so warm and calming, it is possible for them to be mistaken for angels if they deign to not present directly as a dragon.  They have a way to heighten the spiritual vibration in any room they're in, making one feel relaxed, as if they were in a spa or a yoga class.  Beyond this, they may manifest as found feathers, an influence on incense smoke, white or colored orbs, goosebump prickles, or an unexpected gust of wind.

Social Structure

The Bir'rix refer to their civilization as nothing more than "The Community," or "Komu" (koh-mu).  This community is set within a floating city in the sky.  The floating island is roughly 10 miles in diameter, and it is often below clouds, so the sun is not too searing or bright to the dragons living on it.  The buildings are closely packed, tall, and made primarily of white stone and marble.  Those buildings are where the learning takes place, and they are often the homes of many dragons.  There are hundreds of dens dug into the sides of the island, and this is where many of the dragons keep their healing practices, as well as sleep.  Several of these dens are also used to raise hatchlings.

In the center of Komu is a large, communal square with all types of perches and platforms for dragons to rest on.  This is where the majority of events are held. Above the square is an enormous, palace-like building where most political happenings occur.   The palace is open to the public, and it has many rooms with beautiful artwork on display.

The leader of the Bir'rix is an enormous, ancient white female.  She is the head of a council of all of the masters of healing specialties, as well as elders who have worked menial jobs. No voice is unheard in the Bir'rix, and most of their political decisions involve dispatching groups of their community to another civilization, who is hurting because of war, famine, or illness. The Bir'rix will also send small, specialized teams to work astrally on needy civilizations not located on their plane of existence.  These workers are typically given a large, comfortable room to perform their traveling in.

Mating. The Bir'rix do not mate for life.  They can have life partners, or friends who stay with them throughout their entire life, but they are generally not monogamous and blur the line between platonic and romantic frequently.  They will often procreate for their own pleasure or the furthering of the community, choosing their partner by finding personality traits they feel are desirable.  The Bir'rix have no concept of romantic jealousy, nor of pursuing a sexual relationship without first having at least platonic attraction.   Their sexual encounters are very similar to that of birds'.

Religion. The Community does not follow one centralized religion, as they draw all of their energy directly from the world around them.  They believe strongly in reincarnation, and have seen it in action more than once throughout their community and in their interactions with other civilizations, of their plane and not.  They believe in friendship lasting over more than one lifetime, and that is the highest power they look to.  They spend a lot of time in the now, choosing to not look forward to death and despair.  When a member of the Community dies, a vigil is held by their closest friends, and they are believed to be accepted into their next life following the vigil.

Holidays. They have three celebrations throughout the year.  The Bir'rix also do not observe birthdays.  The majority of celebrations are open to companions, and your dragon may bring you along to one of them!
  • Itx (pronounced "eekts") - This occurs in the Winter to celebrate huddling down in dens, and spending time with family.  In the winter it becomes very cold in The Community, as they are a civilization in the sky.  Although it infrequently snows, the air is frosty and there is usually ice clinging to the buildings.  The dragons celebrate by decorating, creating ice sculptures, and sharing warmth energy with each other.  This is the most carefree time of the Bir'rix's year.
  • Wara - This celebration occurs in the Springtime, as the ice melts away and forms pools and rivers.  It is considered to be a celebration of water, and water-based healers often have the most fun with this.  Healing water is exchanged, as well as flowers.  This is the most common time for dragons to mate, and the act is very well-celebrated throughout the community as more life is welcomed into it.
  • Rix - Happening in the middle of summer, this is considered to be the dragons' "New Year."  They celebrate the sun and will exchange gifts, as well as make wishes to the Sun.  This is also considered the time to have fond remembrance of passed loved ones, and send love and luck to their souls in their new bodies. This celebration is open to all cultures and civilizations, and is considered to be quite a large event.

Economy.  Because of the lack of the need of food, the Bir'rix have almost no sense of economy.  They work their healing entirely for free, and they often share their energy and happiness with one another.  Because of this, they are a very well-liked society on their plane.  They are given resources, such as building materials, clothing, and healing tools as gifts from other civilizations.  They do not ask for anything, but they are often gifted items as payment for their services.

Arts.  The arts are often done as a side hobby for most dragons in the Bir'rix society, but they are very widely valued, particularly at celebrations.  It is considered to be a job that less energy-sensitive individuals pick up, but they are just as loved and appreciated as any other member of the society.  The most common art form is dancing.

The art of music is actually considered to be a healing profession, as many dragons believe that song can heal.  Singers are particularly adept at this, although a few dragons play instruments.  These instruments are often strings and percussion, and infrequently are they wind instruments, as the dragons' faces cannot conform to them.  Patients of the musical healers are often encouraged to participate in the creating of the song, which is ideally supposed to heal both their body and their soul.

Visual arts, such as painting and sculpture, are less common but equally valued.  They are considered to be beautiful additions to festivals and celebrations, and many pieces of art wind up in the palace for the entire community to enjoy.  These visual arts are often considered to be a way to spend free time, or to vent frustrations and feelings, and it is encouraged for younger dragons to take part in it.  Every action the Bir'rix perform is considered to propel them toward becoming a better individual, and being more at peace with who they are.

In Companionship

Bir'rix most frequently seek students in their companionship, as they are eager to pass on their healing skills.  However, they may also seek a companion who needs their healing presence, and hope that after the healing has been done they can continue the relationship in a friendly manner.  They are most interested in the exchange of cultures.  They interact frequently with other cultures through astral travel, and their relationship with humans is no different - they are happiest when more of them are circulating in our world, learning and growing as individuals.

Bir'rix are widely varied in their personal magical alignments, so it can be hard to say what a relationship with each one would be like with each person.  However, they are generally very happy to help their companions reach their own goals, and are likely to encourage them to find a balance or a passion that is right for them, much as they were encouraged to do the same when they were young.  They tend to be concerned by the lack of introspection we are encouraged to do as humans, especially at a young age, and how many of us into adulthood still seek our elemental alignment and our passion.  They are happy to assist their companions with looking deep inside themselves, whatever that may mean for each person.
