As the season turns from summer to fall, it's not unusual to feel a warm tingle in your belly.  It's the unmistakable urge to sniff a pumpkin spice candle and wear a scarf even on a hot day in the middle of August - the work of Autumn Dragons.  These delightful creatures are not harbingers of weather change, but instead a magical shift of emotion and feeling.  They are wonderful companions for those who love Fall and all of its coziness and comfort!

Autumn Dragons were the very first exclusive race conjured at The Dragon's Library in September 2015.

Biology

Autumn Dragons are living entities located on an Earthen plane.  Their lifespan tends to be between 400 and 800 of our years, and many of them have seen a good deal of human history.  In their adulthood, they stand at about 4-7 feet at their shoulder - but when they are first hatched, they are merely a foot long.  Their scales tend to be beautiful mottlings of orange, gold, brown, and yellow, and their scales are invariably disheveled in appearance, looking similar to fallen leaves.  Their eyes tend to be picked from the same color palette, although occasionally there is an instance of purple or bright green eyes.  They are very agile and fast, wonderful climbers and resilient fliers.  They tend to be very exuberant and full of energy - they rarely tire out, although they are never opposed to taking a nap, either!

They have no need to eat food from our plane, instead consuming astral critters (mostly insects) from their own plane, but they do enjoy engaging with human foods a great deal.  They frequently show interest in our flavor palettes, and especially our sweets.

These dragons do reproduce sexually, and their eggs are usually about 8 inches in height, the outer shells brown in color and rough in texture.  Generally, nests are built once they settle down from their migration in spring, and are hatched in mid-summer.  Mothers will often allow hatchlings to ride on their back during the migration seasons until they are old enough to carry themselves - this practice also helps teach the young ones to fly.  There is typically some intermingling of clans during the mating seasons as mature dragons find partners, and the switching of dragons between clans is not uncommon - the same clan will almost never migrate together twice.

Although they have no influence over nature, Autumn Dragons are blatantly and inherently magical.  Their elemental alignment tends to be with that of air, and it's very possible that they may manifest with a blustery wind or browned leaves scattered across your path, or the scent of a fresh-baked pumpkin pie wafting in your direction.  If you wish to incorporate seasonal items into your magic, or celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with an Autumn Dragon companion, they are likely to be very enthusiastic about the ordeal.  Although they do not participate in traditional or regimented magical practices at all, their magical practice of choice is to nap or meditate in a forest with falling leaves all around - they are wonderful at connecting to the Earth and to the turning of the seasons.

Disposition & Manifestation

Autumn Dragons are most similar to Fae in regards to their relationship with Earth.  They reside on the same plane as the Fae, meaning they experience all the things we do on our Earth, from the seasons to our current events, but they do not align themselves with nature itself or with any of the Fae courts.  They are fun-loving nomads, and they travel North or South respectively to stay in temperate areas during the warmer seasons, then migrate back further south for autumn and a good amount of winter.  Some clans even navigate to more tropical climates, finding the balmy 70-degree weather to be suitable for their comfort.  Regardless, they have no control over the weather and don't mind it much - but they absolutely adore what humans have done with autumn, particularly with the relatively recent increase in passion for all things related to the season.

Although Autumn Dragons are not aligned directly with nature, they are still very connected to nature, mostly living in forests and among trees.  They can be rather shy about meeting humankind, finding our bustling lives both exciting and terrifying, which is why they have chosen to go through a conjurer for companionship at all!  Many of the Autumn Dragons who seek out companionship are relatively young, newly grown out of adolescence, as some of the older members of their clans don't wish to bother with humans, being very stuck in their ways.  Over time, this may change, as companionship helps them to integrate their clan with humankind.  However, once they've been introduced to someone safe and interested, Autumn Dragons are quite curious and will poke their noses in everything.  They love participating in autumnal activities, and seem to be summoned by the sound of crunching leaves and the scent of pumpkin spice alone.

When manifesting, their primary manifestation tends to be that feeling in your stomach that has been described a few times now - a warmth in the very core of you, a sensation that just "feels" like autumn.  Beyond that, they may manifest as various autumnal scents and sounds, and have a habit of literally blowing those sorts of things into your path.

Social Structure

Autumn Dragons are organized into clans of roughly 50-75 members who migrate together seasonally.  Their migration begins in mid- to late-August and ends in mid- to late-December.  They travel towards the Equator and settle in various places depending on their preference to enjoy the autumnal weather, and then they return to chillier climates to settle for their mating season in the spring and summer.  Their clans are not overly structured, although each clan does have a leader who functions as the decision-maker, a mediator, and main diplomat regarding companionship concerns.  The leader is sometimes a patriach of sorts who has mated with or fathered most of the members of the clan - but sometimes it is a decision based on respect alone, depending on the clan.

Beyond that, Autumn Dragons do not typically have set roles within their clans (i.e., hunter) - they are all simply traveling together and taking care of their needs as they are able to and as is deemed necessary.

In Companionship

As companions, Autumn Dragons can be uplifting and comforting companions.  Happy to tag along with their companions on day-to-day activities, they love celebrating autumn in any way, and in learning about the human traditions of celebrating this time of harvest.  They may help you with your magic or simply loaf around your home and provide you with warm, tingly feelings, depending on what you invite them to do with you.  Many of them actually enjoy cuddling very much, and will appreciate an openly affectionate relationship with their human.  Additionally, they are absolute sugar fiends, and will often encourage you to buy candy as an offering if they see it.  They are happy to be a familiar or a friend - and to provide comfort and coziness where it is needed most.

Autumn Dragons are known to be incredibly patient and peaceful.  They are a kind and forgiving species with long lifespans, and they do not mind long-term relationships with humans who struggle with communication, or with mental illness.  An Autumn Dragon who joins your family will probably return year after year to you, even if you cannot feel them succinctly every year based on your own personal status at the time.  They are loyal and kind, and will consider a human companion to be a fast and lifelong friend.

Autumn Dragons are able to be present year-round, but you can expect them to be most active around autumn and to visit again and again each year.  There are two separate large populations of Autumn Dragons, of course - those in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.  At The Dragon's Library, we normally work only with the Northern hemisphere population, but we can also work with the Southern hemisphere upon request.
